A quick update on the trident maple development project.  We have grown tridents in the field, in root control bags, for 2-3 years.  We then transfer them to Anderson trays to refine and expand the nebari.

Here is a trident just removed from the Anderson tray.  The roots are raked, pruned and washed to get to this next picture.

A bit more pruning.

It's difficult to appreciate in the "looking down" views how much root pruning is done underneath.  Here is the root ball from below.  You can see where large roots were pruned. And, you can begin to realize the potential for fantastic nebari with a few more years of development.

The tree was potted a bit "deep".  This promotes further growth and fusion.

Update on nebari development projects

If you have done email business with Telperion Farms, you have probably seen a comment about the pictures, such as, "The tree is planted deep to continue nebari development, so the actual nebari should be larger than what you can see."

Here's a great example.  This is a trident maple that was started a few years ago.  These first pictures are ones that we sent to a potential customer a few weeks ago.

Today, we decided to take  a look at the nebari.  Here is the picture as we just begin to reveal things.

It's easy to see where the soil line was.  We kept revealing more and more, and here's what we found:

Very exciting for us.  Hope you enjoy.

2011 BSOP Show at the Portland Japanese Garden

On the weekend of May 21 & 22,  the Bonsai Society of Portland had it's annual show at the Portland Japanese Garden.  Here are a few pictures.

A kusianum in bloom.  We had hoped to have satsuki on display, but the weather didn't cooperate.

This is a huge collected hemlock.

On Saturday evening, the show was critiqued by Ryan Neal.  This katsura was his choice for best in show.

A very old apple tree stump, in bloom.
 Shore pine

Voted best deciduous tree in the show.

 Collected ponderosa

Voted best conifer in the show.

I have grouped the shohin trees together.  Sometimes, getting close enough to show the detail of the tree leaves no size reference.

Voted best shohin.
